We always see various organised criminal gangs become active centering the holy Eid festival. The crime incidents, including the activities of ‘Malam Party’ and ‘Agyan Party’, mugging and robbery increase ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Azha festival. Besides, currency counterfeiting gangs also become active to circulate fake notes in the markets especially in the cattle one where sacrificial animals are sold.

People, especially passers-by and passengers of long distance buses, rickshaws and auto-rickshaws and other small vehicles, fall prey to different organised gangs of criminals and lose their cash money, mobile phones, gold ornaments and other valuables. If any passerby or passenger refuses to pay them, the criminals launch attack on them with sharp weapons or even with gun.

On the other hand, armed hoodlums have already started returning to their respective areas in last couple of weeks and been collecting tolls from different markets and shop owners.

The cattle traders every year face extortion on roads and highways when they rush to makeshift cattle markets in the capital and other metropolitan cities from the outlying districts. It is alleged that cops and hardened criminals do not allow any cattle-carrying trucks to cross different points on highways, especially on Dhaka-Khulna, Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Aricha highways, without taking huge toll.

allegation

Extortion on highways must not be tolerated. The authorities concerned must take necessary steps to prevent extortion at cattle markets and from cattle-laden vehicles on highways.

Cattle-laden vehicle must not be halted on roads without specific allegation. Immediate action should be taken if anyone halts cattle-laden vehicles on roads and highways.

The law enforcers will have to launch massive hunts for listed criminals, including muggers, robbers and extortionists across the country just ahead of the Eid festival. Intelligence vigilance will also have to be increased throughout the country to thwart any incident of crime.

The members of law enforcement agencies will also have to work in coordination with the security guards of the houses to prevent any crime in the capital during the Eid holidays.

Apart from cops, different law enforcement agencies like Rapid Action Battalion and intelligence agencies must remain alert and vigilant so that no vested quarters can undermine the law and order situation during the Eid festival. The law enforcers must deal with iron hands if any organised gang wants to commit crime anywhere in the country.
