Most of the students in country's secondary educational institutions are regaining pace in their studies by attending respective class assignments amid the coronavirus pandemic.

After seven and a half months, more than one crore students of 6th grade to 10th grade have started returning to the reading table despite educational institutions still remaining closed.

They are now busy in preparing assignments as per the short syllabus published on the website of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE).

Parents and guardians are also expressing happiness to see their children keeping busy in studies after a long study break.

Somoy Krishti Sarkar, a 6th grade student of Tejgaon Government Girls' High School in the capital, has returned to her study after a long time to do school assignments.

Somoy’s father, Kailash Sarker, said, “I am relieved to see my daughter attending to her studies again. It is indeed a pleasure to see my daughter keeping busy as she has to complete 10 school assignments in a month,” he added.

Like Somoy, almost all the students in secondary schools have started returning to their studies.

Contacted, several school teachers from other districts of the country, including remote areas, said that as per DSHE’s instructions, the teachers are distributing assignments among the students in several groups.

Many guardians are also visiting respective schools along with their children to get guidance on the assignments.

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) published an assignment grid for secondary school students according to six-week short syllabus.

As per the grid of assignments, DSHE published a number of exercises and questions for each subject on their official website.

Every school has started distributing this lesson and assignment grid among the students from 1st November. The school teachers will also collect assignments every week.

According to DSHE's instructions, the learning outcomes of the students will be assessed through assignments.

The Director General of the DSHE, Dr Syed Md Golam Faruk said, "The educational institutions have to download the syllabus from the website and hand it over to the students. We have instructed the head teachers to conduct meetings with all other teachers of the educational institutions and make a detailed work plan."

"If necessary, teachers will contact with the guardians to deliver the assignments and collect it again," he added.

Ashraful Islam, a teacher of Fatikchhari Coronation Model High School in Chattagram told this correspondent, “Many students were desperate to come to school after staying at home for a long time. They are now coming to schools and happily getting assignments and starting their studies."

Meanwhile, the National Academy for Primary Education (NAPE) is also preparing a short 30-day syllabus for primary school students.

The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has set a target to bring 2.5 crore primary school students back to their regular studies.

In addition, about 13 lakh newly HSC students who have passed have also started taking preparations for higher education admission tests.

On the other hand, no clear instruction has been given yet about the primary school students returning to schools.

Meanwhile, the secondary school students would also have a short syllabus which is now in its final stage, a high official of Primary and Mass Education said.

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain recently said, "We will give priority to the safety of the students. Everything depends on the covid-19 situation.”

However, he said, "All possible initiatives will be taken to bring the students back to the reading table."
