A schoolgirl named Sajni Khatun, 17, committed suicide out of pride as she did not get a smartphone from her father. Police recovered her body from the house in Lashmikol Old Hallmore area of Baraigram Upazila in Natore on Saturday morning.

Sajni is the daughter of Shipon Rana of Daulatpur police station in Kushtia district and a class ten student of Baraigram Girls High School. Shipon Rana is a Malaysian expatriate.

According to police and local sources, Sajni, while talking to her father on Friday night, wanted a smartphone on Eid-ul-Adha. But due to financial problems, Shipon wanted some more time to buy the smartphone.

At some point in the night, she committed suicide by hanging herself with the ceiling fan out of pride. When locals informed the police, police recovered the body from the spot and sent it to Natore Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Officer-in-charge of Baraigram Police Station Dilip Kumar Das said Sajni is initially believed to have committed suicide. A UD case has been filed in this connection with the police station.
