The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday upheld life imprisonment for a Jashore man convicted and sentenced by a lower court concerned for carrying 250 bottles of phensedyl.

An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order, allowing an appeal filed by the state against a High Court verdict that had acquitted him of the charges in 2003.

According to the case documents, Badal Kumar Paul was detained by the police with 250 bottles of phensedyl from Chowgacha area in Jashore in 1997.

The lower court concerned in 2000 sentenced him to life imprisonment. But allowing an appeal filed by convict against the lower court judgment, the High Court in 2003, acquitted him of the charges.

The state later appealed against the High Court verdict and after holding a hearing on the matter, the Appellate Division today came up with its judgment.
