A mobile court has seized a dredger machine and a 200-meter pipe for being used at illegally extracting sand from canal in Mirzaganj, Patuakhali.
The raid took place on Monday near Melkarbari in Kanaibari area of Kakrabunia union of the upazila. However, no one was arrested or fined at that time.
The matter has been confirmed by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Raihan Uzzaman.
He said that some influential people in the area have been illegally extracting sand from the underground for a long period.
This caused erosion on the banks of the canal and in the surrounding crop lands.
On the basis of such allegations, dredger machines and accessories were seized on Monday. Later it has been handed over to the chairman of Kankarabunia Union Parishad for disposal as per the rules.
Upazila Vice Chairman Md Zahirul Islam Jewel and concerned Union Parishad Chairman Md. Jahangir Alam were present during the raid.
On the other hand, a mobile court fined Saiful Islam Tk 5,000 for arranging the wedding ceremony of Mohammad Saiful Islam, son of Mohammad Dulal Hawladar of Doklakhali village in Deuli Subidkhali union of the upazila on the same day for ignoring lockdown regulations.
On the same day, mobile courts in different parts of the upazila imposed fines of Tk 2,100 in 11 cases for non-compliance with health rules and regulations.
