The incumbent government under the able leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly to bring our country out of the poverty line. During her tenure the people of Bangladesh saw significant improvement in their standard of living.

The unemployment level dropped and slowly the poverty alleviation process is going well. However, the pandemic somewhat dampened that progress. Now to thrust it forward, the government wants to focus on poverty alleviation with the help of every other south Asian neighbouring countries. Recently the prime minister said, South Asian nations should work to eliminate the curse of hunger, poverty and illiteracy and for the well-being of the people in the region.

The government's target is to alleviate poverty and bring the poor into the mainstream of society and it is working tirelessly to this end. If all other neighbouring countries come together and take a holistic approach together by keeping the poor on priority, then their livelihoods will be enhanced. More new jobs will be created.

Accumulating productive assets in the non-farm economy and agriculture sector can certainly help the government’s cause. There should also be a special allocation in the budget for slum dwellers living in various cities and towns. Focus should be given on the poor living in rural areas and sufficient money should be allocated to create employment for them. Job creation is a big challenge, and it should be reflected in the upcoming budget.

A holistic budget should be implemented in the future so that in both short- and long-term government can address the huge economic impact on the poor and destitute through resources and skills.
