A Russell’s Viper snake was seen at Medenipur village under Jibannagar Upazila in Chuadanga on Wednesady. The snake was seen in a field named Ghar Kati and was killed by the locals immediately.
It was learnt that, one Mobarak Tarafdar and his nephew Atar Ali Tarafdar sat under a Date palm in Chengkhali Ghar Kati field to take rest after they finished working at their jute filed on Wednesday morning. They were sitting on an aisle when they saw the Russell’s Viper snake there. Later, locals killed the snake.
The witnesses said people of Medinipur, Benipur and their area, are living in fear of this snake for several days. Locals claimed they have seen the venomous Russell’s Viper earlier as well.
Jibannagar Forrest Officer Shariful Islam Kajol said the locals killed, burned and buried the snake before they reach the scene after receiving the news. He cannot confirm the species of the snake without seeing it. However, the locals said it was a Russell’s Viper.
Fear of Russell’s Viper has already spread everywhere among the people of the Upazila. A number of Russell’s Vipers were also seen in the border areas of the Upazila earlier.
