Russell Domingo resigns as Bangladesh head coach

Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo has resigned without completing his tenure that ran till the 2023 World Cup. Domingo joined as head coach in September 2019 after the BCB sacked Steve Rhodes following the World Cup debacle that year.

Bangladesh Cricket Board cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus confirmed the development to media on Wednesday. “He( Domingo) sent his resignation letter yesterday (Tuesday) and that is with immediate effect,” said Jalal.

Earlier on Monday, BCB president Nazmul Hasan hinted that though they are happy with Domingo’s performance the board was eyeing an overhaul in the coaching set-up.

“We are moving with a long-term plan and that is not short-term. It is a three to four years plan and if changes are required (to implement those plans) that there will be changes,” Nazmul told reporters.

Domingo had already been relieved of the T20 responsibilities with Sridharan Sriram taking charge of the shortest format a little before the World Cup in Australia.

Bangladesh won T20I series against Australia and New Zealand at home under the guidance of Domingo while they have also earned their Test win in New Zealand and an ODI series win in South Africa.

Bangladesh lost the two-match Test series against India after clinching the ODI series that preceded it in what will now be Domingo's last assignment with the national team.

Meanwhile, Yunus told reporters that the board was looking to finalise a new head coach before the England series that is slated to start on March 1.

Bangladesh will, however, continue to keep the existing system of having two coaches - a separate one for Test cricket and ODIs, and another for T20Is. They are also likely to appoint a high performance manager in charge of the cricket.

“You can see two coaches one for T20, and one for ODIs and Test. You can see we had plans to have separate coach for T20 and our board president has said this before,” Yunus said.

“To bring the coaching system in a track we are going to appoint a performance manager and he will work with overall cricket of Bangladesh and will show our cricket a way forward. We are also planning to appoint a performance director and our board president is concerned with it. We are talking with few candidates in this regard. We will disclose his name once it is finalised. Then we will decide which coach will have which duty.”
