Since the election of December 31, 2018 Awami League’s endeavour to realise its electoral manifesto has been exemplary. It is commendable news that the work to urbanise rural settings with city amenities is going at a reasonable pace. Such a vast undertaking cannot be accomplished with the snap of a finger, but visible cages are taking place. This is definitely something that can be welcomed.

This initiative was first planned to remove the tendency among youth of moving to the cities in search of better employment opportunities. It can be said that the slogan of ‘My village-My town’ is gaining pace with each passing day. It will take some time. But as the government is willing to transform villages into cities through digital centres, it will happen in the long run. And this will surely benefit the masses residing in the rural areas.

However, with the great advent of urbanisation which will take place with the availing of city facilitates in rural areas there is a risk of decreasing of arable lands. This must not happen as a massive percentage of the population survives on agriculture. Even more, the Bangladeshi economy is greatly dependant on agriculture as well.

Experts opine that the government should take multidimensional projects for ensuring smooth electricity and water supply, sanitation, quality education, health services and other civic facilities in the rural Bangladesh as like as in the city and town areas to turn villages into towns.

At present massive development work is being continued across the country which is focusing on the infrastructure development. Better roads are being constructed around rural areas. This will definitely bring a positive roll onto the development of infrastructure across the country which

will increase connectivity for further develop

ment works.

The authorities concerned should be careful in implementing this slogan in a practical form as there are risks of corruption at every turn of the road. Overcoming these challenges and building a ‘Sonar Bangladesh’ has to be the main objective of those involved.
