RU teachers demand scrapping of Digital Act

Dozens of teachers of Rajshahi University formed a human chain in front of Shabash Bangladesh sculpture on the campus on Monday, demanding to scrap the Digital Security Act.

Holding placards at hand, they also demanded release of all persons arrested under the draconian act, in order to ‘revive freedom of speech’ in the country.

In the placard, teachers at the human chain demanded the release of arrested teachers Kazi Zahidur Rahman of RU and Sirajum Munira of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur for their remarks on late, former Minister Mohammad Nasim.

The placards also condemned the arrest of teachers at the midnight from the staff quarters under Digital Security Act. The placard sought the cooperation from the President Mohammad Abdul Hamid and the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to release the varsity teachers.

The human chain was attended, among others, by Chairman of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism Department Associate Professor Al Mamun, Assistant Professor Kazi Mamun Haider Rana, Professor of the department of Anthropology Bakhtiar Ahmed, Associate Professor Kazi Rabiul Alam, Associate Professor of the Department of Environment Scient Institute SM Shafiuzzaman, Assistant Professor of department of Folklore Amirul Islam Kanak and student Ali Ahmed Nishan.
