Failing to repay the loan, Rajon Kumar (45), an employee of Rajshahi University (RU) committed suicide by hanging himself inside the bathroom of his house in Laxmipur Bakirmore area under Rajpara PS Monday morning.

Family members recovered the body of Rajon by breaking open the door of the bathroom and took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared Rajon dead. Rajon's family members claimed that being severely disappointed on failing to manage money to repay the instalment of the loan, Rajon committed suicide.  Rajon Kumar worked as a Class-Four employee posted at the official residence of the RU Vice-Chancellor.

Rekha Rani, wife of Rajon informed, Rajon drew a loan of Tk 170,000 from an NGO named Manob Seba Unnayan. Rajon was paying Tk 10,000 per month as the instalment of the loan.

He was needed to pay seven more instalments to repay the whole amount of the loan and on Monday he was supposed to pay an instalment of Tk 10,000 against the loan. But, he had no money to repay the instalment.  Moreover, Rajon also drew a loan of Tk 200,000 from a local money-lender Sadi son of Ekram Ali of Baganpara area and he repaid a total of Tk 300,000 including the interest to the lender. But, the lender was putting pressure on him to pay Tk 50,000 more as interest and Rajon had paid Tk 30,000 more as interest.

For the rest of Tk 20,000 Sadi and his brother Rocky insisted on Rajon and Sunday night they demanded the rest of Tk 20,000 within Monday, otherwise, they threatened to abduct him from his house. Such threat and his failure to manage money to repay instalments of the loan was the cause of his suicide, claimed his wife Rakhi.

Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajpara police station informed, Rajon drew some Tk 500,000 to 600,000 loans from some NGOs and some local money lenders against a high-interest rate.

He had also repaid some of the loans but the money lenders were putting pressure on him for repaying the money. Such pressure might be the cause of the suicide of Rajon, he opined. But, police were investigating into the incident, he added.
