The first and second units of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Ishwardi, Pabna, have completed the installation of an automated process control system (APCS). Rooppur is also the first Rosatom project outside Russia to implement an Operator Information Support System (OISS).

Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom disclosed the information in a press release on Tuesday afternoon. Rosatom is providing overall support for the project, while its subsidiary Atomstroyexport is working as the contractor.

According to the press release, the system, supplied by Rosatom Automated Control Systems (RASU), comprises around 20,000 instruments under 43 systems. These will monitor more than 7,000 process parameters, including reactor stability, helping ensure the safe and efficient operation of the plant.

Another key component is the Operator Information Support System (OISS), developed by RASU using digital twin technology for the power unit. The system has already been integrated into the first unit and is participating in start-up activities. A similar system will be installed in the second unit.

Rosatom said the automated information and control system analyses data from 360 process systems, identifies potential deviations and advises operators based on more than 80 guidelines, including instructions on how to respond to emergency situations. By presenting complex operational information in an easily understandable format, it helps operators make informed decisions and respond more effectively to developing situations.

Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said, “The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is not only the largest project of cooperation between Russia and Bangladesh but also a flagship project for us in the application of modern automation and control technologies. This is the first time that an Operator Information Support System has been implemented at a power plant built by Rosatom abroad.”

He added that the system would reduce response times, lower operating costs and serve as a reliable support tool for control room personnel. #EK
