Rohingya drug dealer killed in ‘gunfight’

A Rohingya drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazaar on Friday. 

The deceased was identified as Nur Kabir, a resident of Mongdu district of Myanmar.

Captain of BGB Battalion-2 in Teknaf Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Foysal Hasan Khan confirmed the matter. He said that a total of 1,20,000 pieces of contraband yaba tablets, two rounds of cartridge and a locally-made gun were also recovered from the scene.

About the gunfight, the captain said that a special patrol team of BGB found suspicious activities of few persons and challenged them at Leda Beribadh area under Nhilla union of Teknaf in the early hours on Friday. At one stage, the drug peddlers started firing on the BGB members leaving two BGB members injured, he said, adding that for self-defense, the BGB members also urged guns against the drug smugglers. 

Then the smugglers fled scene, he added. 

Foysal Hasan Khan said that after the end of firing, BGB members searched the area and found a bullet-hit man. The critically injured person was taken to Teknaf Sadar Hospital and later Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where on duty doctors declared him dead. A case was filed with Teknaf police station in this connection.
