Rohingya camps catch fire in Cox’s Bazar

A devastating fire broke out in four Rohingya camps at Balukhali under Ukhia in Cox's Bazar on Monday. Several hundred houses have been burnt down in the fire incident. No casualties were reported in the incident.

All the houses in in Balukhali 6-W Rohingya camp have been completely burnt. Seven units of the fire service were working to douse the fire. 

According to Additional Commissioner of the Office of Refugee Relief and Repatriation, Samsudauja Nayan, said that the fire broke out at 3:00pm on Monday at the Rohingya camp No. 6W in Balukhali, Ukhia. He said all the houses in Balukhali 6-W Rohingya camp were burnt down.

The fire later spread to Rohingya camps No. 8-H, 9 and 10 adjacent to the camp. However, the reason behind the fire could not be known immediately, he added. The fire originated at the 8-W Rohingya camp in Balukhali, Ukhia, on Monday afternoon. As there was reckless wind the fire quickly spread to 3 other camps adjacent to the camp, sources said.

SamsudaujaNayan said, “Local volunteers and locals tried to douse the fire as soon as they noticed the fire. On information, firefighters from Ukhia, Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar and Ramu Fire Service rushed to the spot and started operation to douse the flame.”

The firefighters were trying to tame the fire till 6:00pm while this report was being filed.

People were being evacuated from the camps to avoid casualties.

However, members ofFire Service and Civil Defence, law enforcers including APBN of Ramu Cantonment and local villagers were working together to bring the fire under control.

Mohammad Tanzeem, In-charge of Rohingya Camp No. 8 in Balukhali, said that several units of Ukhia Station Teknaf, Ramu Station and Cox’s Bazar Fire Station were working to control the fire. Law enforcers also rushed to the spot and took part in the rescue operation.
