In Gazipur's Kaliakore, there have been complaints of using low-quality materials in the rural road development work. As a result, the locals fear that the road will collapse in the monsoon season. A member was assaulted by angry people for doing low-quality work by ignoring obstacles. Residents have demanded for quality sustainable development. In this regard, Amir Hossain filed a written complaint to the upazila executive officer as a plaintiff on behalf of the local residents.
Allegedly, according to local residents and Union Parishad sources, Kaliakair Upazila Parishad is working to implement the development of four rural roads in four areas in one package in Atabah Union of Kaliakair Upazila. A contractor named M/s Tanya Enterprises got the job at a cost of about 71 lakh 25 thousand rupees. Later that work was taken as a sub-contractor by the local UP chairman of that area. Among those four roads, the development of the road from Darbaria Kabirpur main road towards the house of Chatilviti Asman Munsi is going on. Under the office of Upazila Engineer (LGED), UP Member Nazrul Islam of Ward No. 8 of that union is monitoring the development work. Due to the development work using low-quality materials, the local people have blocked it several times. But two days ago, the member came under fire from angry people for doing low-quality work, ignoring their restrictions. At that time, a person named Sirajul Islam, known as the companion of the local UP chairman, was accused of assaulting the said member. Several people who did not wish to be named said that the local UP chairman is working as a sub-contractor from the main contractor. When the chairman is the contractor, there will be irregularities in the development work. Due to which no one has the courage to open their mouths. The chairman's companion also beat up the member. Later, local Amir Ali made a complaint to the upazila executive officer about the irregularity of the road.
Amir Hossain, who complained on behalf of the local residents, said that I have complained on behalf of the local residents due to the use of number 2, 3 bricks and low quality sand on that road.
Claiming that he is not the chairman's companion, the accused Sirajul Islam said that the member misbehaved with me for saying less sand on the road. So I scolded him. But I did not beat the member.
Denying the irregularity, local UP member (member) Nazrul Islam said that Sirajul misbehaved with me for spreading sand on the road.
Local UP chairman Sakhawat Hossain Shakeel Molla said that they are using low-quality brick-sand on the surface. The latter is said to work with fine brick-sand. But Sirajul is beating my member? I don't know that. Besides, that job was taken by my father (former chairman) for good work. But after his death I became the chairman. So I am trying to finish those tasks with local members.
Upazila Engineer (LGED) Biplab Pal said, there is no opportunity to build roads with low quality materials. The work has been stopped immediately after receiving information about the irregularity. Besides, if any type of B-grade brick is used in the work, it will be removed.
Upazila Executive Officer Tajwar Akram Sakapi Ibn Sajjad said that he has not seen the complaint yet. However, the matter will be investigated and action will be taken as per the rules.
