At least 16 people, on average, lost their lives daily in October last in tragic road crashes in Bangladesh.
According to a monitoring report released on Saturday, at least 475 people were killed and 815 injured in 452 road crashes across the country last month. At least 76 people were killed and 24 injured in 63 accidents on railways in the month.
The Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity prepared the report on the basis of the media reports. Secretary General of the organisation Mozammel Haque Chowdhury revealed the information through a press statement.
The number of deaths would be is higher as many were not reported in the media.
Of the total 475 victims, 138 bike related road crashes claimed lives of 163 people, which is 34.31 per cent and 30.53 percent of the deaths and road crashes respectively.
Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity gave six reasons, including rise in violation of traffic rules in absence of adequate law enforcers on the roads, behind the road crashes.
The organisation placed 11 recommendations, including halting import and registration of small vehicles like motorcycles and easy bikes to reduce the number of the road crashes.
Earlier on November 10, the Road Safety Foundation released a monitoring repot on road crash where it was said that Bangladesh recorded 443 road crashes that claimed 469 lives and injured 837 people in October this year.
The Road Safety Foundation compiled their report based on data from national newspapers, online portals, broadcast media, and internal sources.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) reported at least 4,153 deaths in 4,494 road crashes nationwide between January and September this year.
In comparison, those figures were 4,016 and 3,727 in the first nine months of last year, meaning road crashes and fatalities saw 10.64 percent and 10.26 percent rise respectively.
However, Road Safety Foundation put the fatalities at 5,598 in 5,485 road crashes in the first nine months of this year. Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity recorded 4,745 deaths in 4,620 road crashes during the same period.
