River devours Rajbari recreation centre

Intense river erosion has started again on the banks of Padma in Rajbari district. Due to the erosion, the most popular entertainment center for the visitors of Rajbari in Godarbazar area has disappeared in the riverbed.

Last year, due to severe river erosion, lands and crop fields of many people on the banks of Padma at Godarbazar area were lost in the riverbed. As the erosion has started again in Rajbari, the houses of the locals have to be relocated. There is panic among the local people along the river.

Visiting the area it was seen that the only recreation center on the banks of Padma, named 'Bandhan' built by Rajbari district administration and the 55th Infantry Division of the army, disappeared into the riverbed almost entirely.

According to locals, an area of about 14 meters from ‘Bandhan' to the west along the river bank was washed away in just two hours between 10pm and 12pm on Monday. Locals said, if the erosion continues, the houses and shops of the local people along the river will be eroded very fast. if the administration does not take immediate action to prevent the erosion, there will be huge losses.

Abdul Ahat, Executive Engineer of Rajbari Water Development Board said, “The erosion started in the Godarbazar area from 11pm last night. As soon as we got the news, we took the Geo bag from the godown and started throwing them at night after identifying the eroded area. Hopefully we will be able to prevent this erosion. The erosion has so far damaged an area of 120 meters. We immediately disposed of 1,200 Geo bags. We have all the preparations to prevent the erosion”.

Upon receiving the news of the erosion, Rajbari Deputy Commissioner Dilsad Begum visited the affected area at 9 am on Tuesday. At the end of the inspection, she said, “Water Development Board has started work since last night. We are hopeful that if we all work together, we will be able to save the people of this city from erosion.
