Saikat Das, Bandarban
About 5,000 people from three villages of Lama upazila in Bandarban have been suffering for the lack of a concrete bridge to cross the Bagaichhari canal. Currently they are riskily crossing the canal on a temporary bamboo bridge.
The people of Bagaichhari, Chagalyajhiri and Rangkholla villages of the Union travel by the bamboo bridge in the dry season but during the monsoon, it becomes more difficult to move. Agricultural products cannot also be transported at the time.
Residents of Rangkhola village, Safar Ali and Nurul Islam, said that the bamboo bridge is constructed every year as it breaks down during the monsoon, due to the heavy water flow. At that time, the communication between the three villages remain disconnected.
Students of the area go to school using the bamboo bridge. Fourth grade students of local Ripujipara Govt Primary School Zahidul Islam and Rakibul Islam said in the rainy season when the bamboo beridge is broken we cannot go to school.
Fashiakhali Union Parishad member and local AL leader Md. Hossain Mamun said that construction of a concrete bridge on Bogichari canal would help more than three hundred families of the three vilages.
Surveyor of the Lama LGED Md. Zaker Hossain Mollah said, he will notify the authorities concerned if the locals submit a written application for constructing a concrete bridge.
