Residents of Madarbari in the Uttarkhan area have accused a group of local political activists of creating panic and exerting undue influence over the neighbourhood, according to multiple residents who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Locals say the group, described as close associates of one another, has long been involved in irregular activities tied to residential construction. Allegations include extortion during house-building projects and coercing residents to purchase construction materials from specified suppliers at inflated prices. Several residents also claim they have faced threats and intimidation when attempting to resist these demands.
Residents told reporters that the group’s activities had subsided during recent political upheavals but have regained momentum and influence, reportedly strengthened by ties with some local public representatives.
They said several complaints and cases have previously been filed at the Uttarkhan police station relating to the group’s conduct.
“The situation has made everyday life stressful — people are worried about their safety,” one resident said.
Local people are urging authorities to investigate the allegations and ensure public safety.
