Renovation of Satyajit Ray’s ancestral home starts

The Department of Archeology has started renovation work on the dilapidated ancestral home of world-renowned Oscar-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

Finally, after a long struggle, the cherished and long time demand of the people of Katiadi was met. Earlier on December 29, State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid visited Satyajit Ray's ancestral home. Later, on the instructions of the minister, the Department of Archeology started the renovation work on Monday.

It is learnt that the State Minister directed the Department of Archeology to protect the abandoned house of ‘Shishu Sahitya’ and Zamindar Sukumar Roy and the historical building‘Neel Kuthi’, a witness to the torture of ‘British Banian’ in Jalalpur Union. In this context, the Department of Archeology started the renovation work.

Abul Hossain, Assistant Archaeological Chemist, Department of Archeology, told the media, “Renovation work of this historic house started on the instructions of the state minister of culture. The upper part of the building will be reconstructed at the beginning of the initiative. Chemicals will be used to clear vegetation and forest on the north and east sides of the building.”

The dilapidated house will be renovated keeping the current design intact. Besides, the abandoned building was initially cleaned and an estimate was made for the renovation, according to sources concerned. 

Md Zakaria, Deputy Assistant Engineer, Department of Archeology said, “We have made an estimate for the renovation of this abandoned building. Once the proposal is approved and funds are allocated, the current design of the house will be maintained and renovated.”
