The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested Regent Hospital Chairman Mohammed Shahed aka Shahed Karim over coronavirus test scam and other forgeries.

A team of the elite force caught him in frontier Debhata Upazila in Satkhira with an illegal firearm around 5.30 am Wednesday, about a week after the scam involving his hospital came to light.

Shahed was on the run since RAB sealed off his two hospitals in the capital’s Uttara and Mirpur and arrested several of his employees during raids there last week on charge of Covid-19 certificate forgery and cheating patients.

A case was filed against Shahed and 16 others over the forgery and cheating. Detective Branch of police is now investigating the case.

After the arrest, Shahed, who RAB said was trying to flee to India to avoid arrest, was brought to Dhaka by a helicopter.

RAB Legal and Media Affairs Director Lt Col Ashik Billah told the media that they could have missed him if they were a bit late to reach the spot. He said a loaded pistol was recovered from him after arrest.

Earlier, Regent Group Managing Director Masud Parvez, one of Shahed’s sidekicks, was arrested from Gazipur in the case.
