Re-excavation of Tangon River commenced

The re-excavation work of Tangon River of Thakurgaon was inaugurated as a part of a small river canal reservoir re-excavation project in 64 districts. Ramesh Chandra Sen, MP, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Water Resources Ministry inaugurated the excavation work on Wednesday.

Earlier, Water Development Board held an inaugural meeting at the Aparajaya-71 compound on the riverbed of Tangon. Ramesh Chandra Sen was present as the chief guest at the meeting presided by Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Dr. KM Kamruzzaman Selim. Ramesh Chandra Sen said that the Prime Minister has taken initiative to re-excavate all the rivers in the country.

All the old rivers will be restored by doing this. To reduce the pressure on underground water, the water sources above the ground should be processed and utilized. Only then the country could be protected from natural disasters including earthquakes.

He added that it is the responsibility of the people to oversee the excavation. They must keep track of the work themselves. He described various developmental activities of the present government and highlighted the development of various roads, bridges, culverts, educational institutions and other institutions in Thakurgaon district. He also sought the cooperation of all to complete the development activities of the Prime Minister.

Jyoti Prasad Ghosh, Chief Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) North Zone, Mahbubur Rahman, the Caretaker Engineer of Thakurgaon ‘Pwor’ Circle, SNM Samiunnabi Chowdhury, Commander of 50 BGB, Acting Police Superintendent Abu Taher Mohammad Abdullah, Md. Sadek Quraishi, President of AL’s district unit and General Secretary Deepak Kumar Roy were present as special guest.

It is to be noted that a project has been undertaken to excavate 35 km area of Tangon River in Thakurgaon. It will cost Tk. 24 crore 42 lakh 91 thousand 2 hundred and 30. The project is estimated to end within 22 April of the current year. The river will regain its navigability after the project is completed.
