RCC gets National Environment Award

Rajshahi City Corporation has been awarded with the National Environment Medal-2021  for the second time under the Preservation of Nature and Pollution Control category .Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton received the medal from the Minister for Environment, Forestry and Climate Change Shahab Uddin MP at a function organised at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the function of the world Environment Day-2022 through video conferencing from the Gonobhaban. 

The function was attended, among others, by President of the standing committee of the ministry of EFCC Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP, Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar and  Environment Secretary Farhina Ahmed. 

Earlier, in 2012, RCC was awarded for the first time the National Environment Medal. In 2016, Rajshahi was selected as the best city in the world in containing harmful dust particles from air and in 2020 Rajshahi city was awarded with the distinction of ' Environment Friendly City of the year-2020 and in 2009, RCC was also awarded with the Prime Minister's National Award in tree plantation. 

After receiving the National Environment Medal-2021, RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He said he along with the staff of RCC have worked year round to make Rajshahi an environment friendly city and he would be further attentive to preserve the environment so that it becomes an instance for Bangladesh. 

RCC sources mentioned road dividers, road-islands and footpaths covering nearly 30-kilometre have been made green through transplantation of various trees. In 2021-22, RCC has transplanted saplings of some 42,400 trees and some 300,000 hedged in the islands of the roads and in the empty spaces under RCC. Moreover, during winter in 2021-22, some 164,800 flower plants have been transplanted on various road islands and squares.
