A councillor candidate in the upcoming Rajshahi City Corporation Elections on Saturday alleged that his rival candidate set his electoral camp on fire.
Akhtar Ahmed Bachchu, also president of ward 26 (west) of the ruling Awami League Rajshahi city unit, said that the followers of his rival candidate and the incumbent councillor Aktaruzzaman Koel, also a supporter of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, set his electoral camp in Jamalpur area in the city on fire at about 11:00am on Saturday.
Career' came with his supporters to his polling camp and burnt it down around 11-00 AM Saturday.
Akhteruzzaman Koel, however, has refuted the allegation.
It is learnt, Akhter Ahmed Bacchu is the General Secretary of ward-26(west) and Akhteruzzaman Koel is the incumbent Councillor of ward-26. He is learnt to be a supporter of BNP.
Police visited the burnt camp spot and a complaint has been filed with Chandrima Police Station in this connection. Bacchu said, being failed to tolerate the increased support in his favour, his rival contestant Akhteruzzaman Koel with 20-25 supporters with lethal arms came to his polling camp and burnt it down Saturday morning. Later police visited the spot and a written complaint has been filed with the local police station in this connection, he added.
Meanwhile, incumbent Councillor Akhteruzzaman Koel has refuted the allegations of burning down the polling camp of Bachchu and said he has no idea where the camp has been burnt. The allegation brought against him is not true, he added.
Officer-in-charge of Chandrima PS Rafiqul Islam in this connection informed, being informed about the incident, police went to the spot and found no one on the spot.
A complaint has been submitted to the police station and necessary action will be taken in this connection after investigation.
