Quick execution of RU Prof murder verdict demanded

Teachers and students of Rajshahi University (RU) on Tuesday demanded quick execution of the verdict announced in the murder case of AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee.

They came up with the remark while addressing a short rally at Mukul Mancha in front of Shahidullah Kala Bhaban at around 11:00am. More than three hundred students participated at the rally to mark the three years into the professor killing arranged by English department.

Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, 58, was hacked to death in Shalbagan area near his house in Rajshahi city while he was on his way to the university on April 23, 2016. 

On May 8 last year, the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Jamaatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh’s two members to death and three operatives of the banned extremist outfit to imprisonment for life term to take part in Rezaul Karim Siddiquee’s murder.

Addressing the short rally, Professor Md Jahurul Islam, the slain professor’s colleague said that they felt satisfied after the lower court’s verdict at first as they thought that the offenders would be punished but the process of the trial in the high court is yet to begin. 

However, students and colleagues of the slain professor, demand fast implementation of the court’s verdict against the perpetrators who are mainly responsible for the murder. 

They also urged to the authorities concerned to execute the verdict as soon as early possible.

Among others, department’s Professor Shahidur Rahman and associate Professor Md Sakhawat Hossain addressed at the programme.

Later, on the life of the slain Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, a documentary film was screened at the department.

Earlier in the morning, over three hundred teachers and students of the department brought out a procession on the campus at 10:00am to press home their demand.
