As reported by this daily on Monday, public universities will be able to take the final examinations at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in accordance with the decision of Academic Council of the respective universities amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision was taken at a virtual meeting organized by University Grants Commission (UGC) in presence of Vice-Chancellors of 39 public universities.

Reportedly, UGC placed seven recommendations about conducting final examinations and practical classes. The first recommendation states that public universities may take necessary steps regarding the semester final examinations of undergraduate and postgraduate students to recover their irreparable losses of education due to Covid-19.

It is time to recover the

irreparable losses of

education due to Covid-19

According to recommendations, students studying in the last semester will be given priority in completing semester exams, practical classes and assessments. However, the final and the most important recommendation is that all the universities must follow the guidelines issued by the World Health Organization to contain the spread of the corona virus while taking exams.

As graduate and undergraduate students of final semester have not been able to sit for their final exams due to Covid-19, taking necessary steps on the part of the authorities concerned  to conduct exams has become very much pertinent.

There is no denying that online classes are continuing in all the public universities but students are disappointed as exams are not being held. It needs no emphasising that without exams or assessments, online education will lose its credibility and its quality will also fall. However, university authorities must keep in mind that they have to strictly follow the government’s directives while taking exams in order to tame the spread of coronavirus.

Taking all into consideration, academic councils of the respective universities should take pragmatic steps to implement this latest

decision with an aim to negate session jam and make students qualified for sitting in the upcoming BCS exams.
