Public transport to continue during strike

Khandaker Enayet Ullah, general secretary of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association, said that buses and other public transportations would continue to run on the streets of Dhaka city, suburbs and the inter-district routes during the strike today called by Hefazat-e-Islam. He said this in a press release sent to the media on Saturday.

Hefzat-e-Islam announced the program on Friday in protest of the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangladesh.

The press release, signed by Samdani Khandaker, office secretary of the association, stated that an emergency meeting was held at the office of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association at 12 noon on Saturday, to discuss the issue of keeping buses active during the strike called by Hifazat-e-Islam. Transport leaders at the meeting said that they are in the business of transport and if there is a strike, they will suffer. Attempts to create problems for the public, by calling such strikes are not justifiable in any way.

During the strike, it is decided that bus and minibus services on all routes in Dhaka city and suburbs will continue. Vehicles will also run on inter-district routes, depending on the availability of passengers,.

During the meeting, the concerned police administration was advised to strengthen security at important places of the city so that there would be no obstruction to the movement of vehicles on the day of the strike.

The meeting was chaired by Khandaker Enayet Ullah, General Secretary of Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association. Besides, leaders of Fulbaria Bus Terminal Owners Association, Sayedabad Inter-District and City Bus Terminal Owners Association and Mohakhali Bus Terminal Road Transport Owners Association were present there.
