Over 100 teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) again brought out a procession protesting the ‘unplanned development project’ on the JU campus on Sunday.
They brought out the procession under the banner of “Durnitir Biruddhe Jhangirnagar.”
The procession started from the Social Science Faculty building of the campus after marching on different roads and buildings the procession ended at Murad Chattar. They also held a short rally after finishing the procession.
Speaking at the rally, Prof Rayhan Rhyne of Philosophy said, “The university administration has taken the initiative to construct some unplanned building in the name of development. They have transformed development into trade and turned this university into business space.”
Addressing the ongoing development project as a tragedy Ashikur Rahman, president of Cultural Alliance, said, “University administration is making joke in the name of development. Vice-Chancellor is the head of the university. But the head of the university has been accused of money scam. We demand a judicial inquiry against the corruption as soon as possible.”
Prof Dr Sayeed Ferdous said, “We have requested the university authorities several times to revise the ongoing development project but ignoring our requests they continue to work.”
Denying the allegation of corruption Pro-VC (education) Prof Dr Md Nurul Alam told Bangladesh Post, “The news about corruption is baseless. Whatever obstacles are underway, we will continue the development project.”
Among others Prof DR Shamima Sultana Lucky of Bangla Department, General Secretary of Somajtantrik Chhatra Front Mohammad Didar, Abu Sayed, Joynal Abedin Shishir and Ariful Islam from Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatro Adhikar Parishad, Maruf Mozammel from Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance, leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Somajtantrik Chhatra Front, Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatro Adhikar Parishad were present at the procession.
