Professor Md Abul Kashem Mia joined as the vice-chancellor of United International University (UIU) on October 17, 2023.
His appointment has been made by the president and chancellor of the university Mohammed Shahabuddin for a 4-year term, said a press release.
Prior to his joining the position Abul Kashem Mia was the pro-VC of UIU. Before joining UIU, he was the head of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology’s Computer Science and Engineering department. Also, he was the controller of examinations in BUET for 2012-2018 terms.
Prof Abul Kashem Mia also served as dean, school of science and engineering of UIU in 2018-19 session.
Prof Kashem obtained his PhD from Tohoku University, Japan in 1998 and Master’s from the same university in 1995. He did his MS in CSE and Bachelor’s in EEE from BUET.
In 2006, prof Kashem led the development of ‘BUET Institutional Information System’ the first of its kind in Bangladesh.
He has also led different projects related to ICT in the government and private levels.
Abul Kashem Mia is engaged in multidimensional research including algorithms, parallel processing, graph theory, graph visualization and computational complexity.
A total of 50 research articles by prof Kashem have been published in national and international journals.
