The probe committee, formed by the Fire Service and Civil Defence to investigate  the Gulshan fire, will submit a report on Monday.

According to a source, the investigation revealed that the fire started from gas and electricity lines. The committee is investigating several causes. However, the committee confirmed that the fire started from a flat on the fourth floor.

Apart from gas leakage and electrical short circuit, evidence of cigarettes was found there.

On Sunday night, the five-member probe committee led by Lt Col Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, director (operations and maintenance) of Fire Service and Civil Defence, to find out the cause behind the fire, was formed.

The headquarters' deputy director (operations and maintenance), assistant director, deputy assistant director of Gulshan Zone, and officer-in-charge of the local fire station were made members of the committee.

Tajul Islam Chowdhury said that  they are investigating some motives for the fire in the building. However, they have identified three causes of fire. That is why it is taking time to submit the investigation report. There was an electrical short circuit next to the gas line. Besides, signs of cigarette smoking were found there.

The fire started from a fourth floor flat. Now we are trying to ascertain the cause of the fire, he said.

He also said that they have asked the owner of the building to wait till Saturday.

I have requested them not to destroy any evidence there till then. For the sake of investigation, it may take till Sunday instead of Saturday.

I will then submit the investigation report to the higher authorities on Monday, said the fire service official.

According to police sources, owners of different flats are coming. They are taking essentials from their flats. After the fire, the electricity and gas connection to the building was cut off for safety reasons. The connection is still snapped.

At least two people were killed in a fire that broke out at the multistorey building in Gulshan on Sunday evening.

Several people were injured after jumping from the building. Twenty-two people were rescued alive from different floors and the roof of the building.
