Law enforcement agencies apprehended an undertrial man hours after he absconded from a hospital in Dhaka on early Saturday.

Twenty-year-old Mintu Hossain, an accused in a drug case, fled the Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital before being arrested from Babubazar area of the Old Dhaka on Saturday noon.

Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station Inspector Mizanur Rahman confirmed the matter to Bangladesh Post.

Jail authorities admitted Mintu to the Mitford Hospital with respiratory disease around 7:30pm on Friday, the hospital’s Director Brig Gen Kazi Md Rashid Un Nabi said.

Hospital authorities later learned that the prisoner escaped around 4:30am, he added.

Following the incident, prison officials reported to the Kotwali police.

Being informed about Mintu’s whereabouts, prison guards cornered in Old Dhaka’s Babubazar area and informed the police, said OC Rahman.

Later police and jail guards jointly arrested Mithu, he added.

According to the jail sources, Mintu faces drug charges in a case filed with Gopalpur Police Station in Tangail.

He landed in the district jail on August 13 before being transferred to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj for better treatment.

Meanwhile, jail authorities suspended three prison guards over the incident and opened a probe. However, Bangladesh Post could not independently verified those accounts.

On August 6, another prisoner Abu Bakar Siddique, who faces life in prison, escaped from Kashimpur Central Jail 2 in Gazipur and remained traceless since then.
