Police have arrested Sumaiya's husband Mostak and father-in-law Zakir Hossain in connection with the murder of Sumaiya Khatun, a meritorious student of Dhaka University (DU) in Harishpur area of Natore.

Mostak and his father Zakir Hossain were arrested from Nandigram in the early hours of Thursday in a special operation by the district police in the border area of Bagha in Natore. Earlier, the victim's mother-in-law and sister-in-law were arrested on the night of filing the case.

Superintendent of Police Liton Kumar Saha disclosed this at a press briefing at the office of the Superintendent of Police on Thursday afternoon.

The superintendent of police further said that after the victim's mother filed a case, the police raided the house that night and arrested mother-in-law Syeda Maleka and sister-in-law Zakia Yasmin Juthi from their house in Harishpur area of Natore city. Sumaiya, a student of Islamic Studies Department of Dhaka University, daughter of the late Siddiqur Rahman Jessore, a renowned Islamic speaker from Balaripara area of the city, was preparing for the BCS examination after completing her Masters examination. Sumaiya's husband and mother-in-law used to torture her regularly for her studies and job.

They fled after leaving her in an unconscious state at Natore's Sadar Hospital, claiming that Sumaiya had committed suicide after being tortured on Monday morning. Police super later inspected the incident. Police began the operation by recording a murder case at 1 pm on Monday.

Meanwhile, according to the police sources, the unemployed Mostak  became angry as he did not get the required amount of money from his father-in-law's house.

He repeatedly pressured her to bring money from her father's house. After the death of her father, Sumaiya was thinking of doing something on her own without asking for money from her stroke-stricken mother. That is why she was preparing to take part in the BCS exam.
