As winter is approaching, the price of mattressis increasing across countrywide. Therefore, the business of mattress artisans has also increased in Kishoreganj. Besides, traders have also started selling winter warm clothes by decorating their shops.

Winter has been feeling in Kishoreganj since last week. Green fields and vegetation are covered with fog in the morning. Winter usually starts from early December in the country which usually starts from the northern districts.

People have already started getting blankets to cope with the winter. So, keeping the winter ahead, the artisans seem to have no pause now.

On Saturday (November 20), the mattress shops were seen full with quilts, mattresses and blankets in different markets of the district.

According to Joynal, a trader in the Gaital Dubail market, the number of buyers is much higher this year. In these three months of winter, sales are a little higher than the whole year. So keeping the quality of the goods in mind, shop owners are making and selling readymade goods along with the ordering work.

Joynal also said that he has been doing business locally for about 13 years. Two of his cotton warehouses caught fire two years ago and he was having a hard time because the shops were closed during the Covid-19 period.

Officially, he did not get any opportunity. If authorities provide insurance and loan, he and other mattress makers will be saved from this kind of loss. Or traders will lose confidence in this profession.

Murad, a retail buyer, said that no matter how much blankets sold in winter season, thesale of mattress always remain consistent and high.

According to local traders, leftover garments and cotton are used to make mattress.A single mattress sells for 650-700 taka, a semi-double for 700-900 taka and a double for 750-1800 taka. This includes the cost of yarn, cloth and wages.

However, making mattresses costs more. The cost of making each mattress depends on the quality, quantity of cotton, coconut husk and cloth.
