When it comes to buying necessary ration items, the marginalised and middle-class families are having a real tough time as the prices

have gone up at both retail and wholesale markets . According to a report published in this daily on Saturday, the prices of fish, meat and most vegetables and other necessary items have gone out of reach of common people. People with limited income are now under immense pressure to meet their daily food needs. Furthermore, the pandemic has reduced the income of many as well as snatched people’s livelihoods.

Authorities concerned should conduct

drives and take legal action against the

dishonest traders

Traders say the price of essential commodities are soaring due to rise in demand and lack of supply and also increase in price of raw materials needed for food production. Government should formulate policies so that farmers can produce the necessary items in bulk.

The government recently announced the budget for the fiscal year 2021-22. However, no effect of budget has been noticed in reducing prices. Though the budget has announced a reduction in the prices of some products, the effect has not been felt yet. Market regulatory bodies should make sure that the price reduction of necessity commodities does take into effect soon.

We all know that, if the supply of goods is stable, dishonest traders will not be able to increase prices of essential commodities randomly by creating a fake food crisis. Therefore, to curb the price hike, government needs to safeguard ample supply of daily commodities, particularly food items. Also, the authorities concerned should conduct drives and take legal action against the dishonest traders.
