Potato processing a must to reduce post-harvest losses

Processing of potato can be the best way of its proper and multipurpose use through resisting post-harvest losses.

Simultaneously, there are scopes of generating potential entrepreneurs in the field of potato diversified use, preservation and marketing.

Administrative officials and experts of the sector came up with the observations while addressing the closing ceremony of a four-month training on potato preservation and processing by phases here today.

On behalf of the 'Multipurpose use of potato, its preservation and marketing development project', the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) organized the training at its conference hall.

On the occasion, 12 entrepreneurs were given potato processing machines.  

Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Shamim Ahmed and Director of the project Anwarul Haque addressed the ceremony as chief and special guests respectively with DAM Deputy Director Shamsur Rahman in the chair.

DAM Assistant Director Shahnaz Parveen and Trainer Afrin Hossain also spoke.

In his remarks, Shamim Ahmed said production of the potato was enhanced to a greater extent in the country compared to its demands. Like other parts of the country, commercial farming of the cash crop has become popular in Rajshahi region.

He hoped that the entrepreneurs after getting the training on potato processing can expand their market avenues. Thereby, employment scopes will also be increased.
