Poor internet service, power cut disrupt online classes at SUST

Published : 30 Oct 2022 09:42 PM

Poor internet connection is badly hampering the academic activities at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

As a result, educational setbacks can have significant impacts on academic success, students said. Besides, frequent power cuts are worsening the situation.

As per the decision taken by the university authorities, the teachers are taking online classes instead of offline ones every Thursday.

Even though the students continued protesting the university authorities’ decision and requested them to take offline classes, the authorities have not paid heed to the students’ call.

So, the students and teachers living in their respective dormitories and residences on the campus are facing trouble due to poor and

slow internet service and connectivity issues.

However, SUST has high reputation for non-violent student movements. Even the students studying at the university face no session jam.

Although the students of all residential halls have internet access, they are now facing serious difficulties in getting internet facilities as the net speed is very low.

Free internet access must be considered as a student right on the campus according to the university authorities’ commitment.

A female student of the CSE department said they cannot take any notes when they attend online classes.

“As the teachers of all departments of the university take online classes on Thursday at a time, the net connection becomes slow,” she added.

Talking to this correspondent, the students said that they several times informed the university authorities, but they have not got any positive response from them yet.

“Our sufferings will mount if this trend continues,” another student said.

Apart from internet disruption, the residential students also expressed their resentment over frequent power outages that are also leading to water crisis.

Students alleged that they are not getting water and power, which also made their lives miserable.

Apart from water supply crisis, the power outage also hampered other aspects of daily life, such as bathing, affecting the academic activities, the students alleged.

When electricity goes out, the net connection also remains cut off, they added.

So, they are failing to take preparation for term tests and assignments as well.

The students urged the university authorities to ensure internet speed and uninterrupted power supply for continuation of their academic activities immediately.

“Uninterrupted internet, electricity and water must be provided to the students immediately to facilitate the studies,” a student said.
