Former Secretary of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Dr. Md. Faridul Islam, stated that politics is the largest arena for public service, but it is not a profession. Rather, it serves as the driving force behind society, the economy, and development.
He made these remarks during an exclusive interview with journalists on Monday morning at the headquarters of the Latif Master Foundation in Bagerhat.
Dr. Islam emphasized, "The largest sphere of public service is the political arena, but it is not a profession. Politics is the driving force of society, the economy, and development. When an elected government is in power, the people's representatives chosen by votes get the opportunity to stand by the people in their joys and sorrows. Development accelerates further when the administration works as a supportive force."
Reflecting on past experiences, he added, "In a way, we were also among the deprived. During the former autocratic Sheikh Hasina government, many officials in the administration were deprived of various opportunities. However, after August 5, through the movement of students and the public, we have found a new opportunity to stand up again. Our goal now is to work for the country, the nation, and the people of the region, and to advance the pace of development."
Paying deep respect to the martyrs of the Great Liberation War and the July War, Dr. Faridul Islam said, "We are eternally grateful to those who sacrificed their lives for the independence of this country. I pray for the forgiveness of their souls and the swift recovery of the injured."
The former Secretary further stated, "I am not alone in working for the development of Bagerhat; my colleague and former Secretary Dr. Mashiur Rahman is also by my side. We are working together, shoulder to shoulder. The 18 crore people of the country are awaiting a free and fair election. Once such an election is held, we will be able to work with the people for the overall development of Bagerhat and the country. It is our hope that the people will remember us for our actions and integrity."
Dr. Faridul Islam concluded, "We wish to contribute to the development of society using our administrative experience and skills. Even without engaging in politics, there is an opportunity to work out of a sense of responsibility to the country, and we aim to utilize that space."
