The 22nd national council of Awami League (AL) will be held on December 24 at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city. AL Central Working Committee on October 28 announced the date after a meeting at Ganabhaban with party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. The inaugural session will be held in the morning, while the council session in the afternoon to be followed by a colourful cultural function in the evening. Sheikh Hasina will deliver the welcome address in the inaugural session.
But the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will hold a countywide mass-procession programme on the same day on December 24 in order to start the simultaneous anti-government movement along with other political parties who agreed to work with it for what they say ‘the restoration of democracy, caretaker government and people’s voting rights’. The party announced the date on December 10.
The BNP leaders knew that national council of AL would be held on December 24 as the ruling party announced the date 42 days before its (BNP) Dhaka division rally held on December 10. Keeping in mind BNP’s Dhaka division rally, the conference of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of ruling AL was rescheduled and it was held on December 6 instead of December 8. But BNP has deliberately announced date to stage countywide mass-procession programme on the same day in a bid to obstruct AL’s national council and invite violence as well.

BNP has proved again that the party is the greatest obstacle in the path of democratic progress in the country. Considering the AL’s national council, the BNP could change the date of its countywide mass-procession programme.
But the party did not do so as its main target is to foil the victory day programmes and create a constitutional and political vacuum in the country.
BNP is doing everything whatever needed to obstruct the democratic progress and they are the main obstacle towards practicing democratic norms and values. Therefore, BNP and its leaders will be responsible if any untoward incident takes place on December 24.
The BNP should respect other political parties and refrain from staging its countywide mass-procession programme on December 24. The party does politics of killing people through arson attacks and they do not stand beside the countrymen during any disaster. Hence, we all will have to build resistance against BNP-Jamaat if they try to create chaos in the country.
