A senior officer of Bangladesh Police has been detained in India’s North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal while allegedly attempting to cross the border, according to media reports.
Sources said Assistant Superintendent of Police Arifuzzaman Arif was detained by the BSF for illegally entering India through the Satkhira-Kakdanga border.
On Saturday evening, he crossed the Kakdanga border in Satkhira and went near the Hakimpur border post in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal when the BSF arrested him. Later, he was handed over to the West Bengal Police.
He is currently in police custody at the Swarupnagar police station in Basirhat subdivision.
Satkhira Additional Superintendent of Police Mukit Khan said that Mohammad Arifuzzaman was working as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Rangpur Metropolitan Police before August 5 last year. Later, he was transferred to APBN-2 in Muktagachha upazila of Mymensingh district.
He worked there until October 13 last year.
From October 14, he was temporarily suspended on charges of not appearing at work without permission, misconduct and absconding.
He has been absconding since then, the official said.
He also said that there are 5 cases against him on various charges, including murder, at Tajhat and Kotwali police stations in Rangpur.
Subedar Kamruzzaman of Kakdanga BGB said that an investigation is being conducted into the matter.
