We applaud Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun for his bold steps to turn every police station in the country. Police station is the main centre of police service delivery, ‘a place of public trust and confidence’. Therefore, the police forces must work to earn the people’s trust and confidence in all police stations across the country.

However, we are stunned as to why there should be corrupt practices when the government enhanced the salaries, allowances, and other privileges of police department significantly. But the fact is that some police are allegedly still indulging in corruption and taking bribes from the service-seekers. The service-seekers either rural or urban area are also being harassed and humiliated in many ways by the greedy and corrupt police officials and constables when they go to the police stations to get service or for other important purposes. The officers-in-charge (OCs) of most of the police stations across the country allegedly extend their support in some cases to the criminals to run their illegal trade in exchange of graft. Even a section of dishonest OCs have made a mint by taking bribes, according to media report.A police station is established to ensure security of people and businessmen and curb crimes. It is worrying that some cops led by their boss (OCs) are doing everything possible to ensure security criminals instead of common man in exchange of graft, it is alleged.

A police station is established

 to ensure security of people

 and businessmen and curb crimes

We think the field-level police officers and constables will have to pay heed to the IGP’s instruction to ensure transparency and accountability in police station activities. They will have to work relentlessly to earn peoples trust for building a peaceful society by ensuring better law and order situation. The field-level police officials and members will also have to work in such a way, that the public in general can derive total benefits of the services. The present government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very much positive towards transforming the police force into a modern one side by side with the welfare of all its members. We believe our police forces will work with firm determination and sincerity to ensure transparency and accountability in the future. And they will make country’s every police station ‘a place of public trust and confidence.
