A police inspector was killed in a road accident at Purinda area on Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Arihazar upazila at small hours on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Md Shafiullah Jewel, 45, son of Azizur Rahman, resident of Purinda village of Araihazar upazila and served at Turag police station in Dhaka.
Quoting the locals, police inspector Zobayer Hossain of Araihazar police station said that the accident occurred on Highway in a head-on collision between a private car and a covered van. Inspector Shafiullah was returning home by a private car and it collided with an opposite bound covered van and he died on the spot.

Police soon after the accident seized the covered van but its driver managed to escape from the spot. Shafiullah left behind a wife, a son and two daughters, family sources claimed.
