State Minister for Water Resources Zahid Faruk said immediate action was being taken to prevent river erosion by identifying risky areas across the country and Geo-bags prepared in advance were being used as a precautionary measure to prevent erosion. Plans to permanently protect the high-risk areas from erosion after the monsoon will be implemented at a later date. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is staying constantly updated regarding the people affected by the devastation. He also directed to take sustainable measures to prevent river erosion.
Assuring the victims of rehabilitation and taking permanent measures to prevent river erosion, the minister said the present government stands by the helpless people in all calamities and will always stand by them. In order to protect the biodiversity, everyone must be responsible for the river and its water, just as everyone must be responsible for the protection and protection of the river bank.
He said this while inspecting the areas affected by river erosion in Nagarpur of Tangail district, Charkatari on the left bank of Jamuna river in Daulatpur upazila of Manikganj district and Chauhali upazila of Sirajganj district today. State Minister Zahid Faruk said, “The government is committed to protecting the river. Due to the timely and effective initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the people of Bangladesh have been protected from river erosion more than ever before. Along with the present government, the leaders and workers of all levels of the Awami League always stand by the side of humanity in times of calamity and danger.”
In order to establish a developed Bangladesh of forty one years, the rivers of Bangladesh and the people along its banks must be protected. To this end, the government is working to prevent erosion as well as to restore the navigability of all the rivers that have lost their navigability. River erosion is on the rise due to illegal sand extraction, illegal and unplanned sand extraction must be stopped at any cost, he added.
He further said that large rivers in Bangladesh need to be dredged and with that sand the banks of the river will be bound, and crops will be planted there, and trees will be planted.
Speaking to the victims of the eruption, the state minister said that one of the reasons for the eruption was unplanned and illegal extraction of sand from various places along the banks of the Padma. As a result, the speed of the water is hitting the shore.
This unplanned illegal sand extraction must be stopped to save the Padma bank area from erosion. The state minister directed the district and upazila administrations to stop illegal sand mining from the river banks, he added.
