Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated 100 highways countrywide.  While inaugurating the highways on Wednesday she (Sheikh Hasina) said the 100 highways, which are opened, are gift from her to the nation in the month of victory.

Most of the 100 highways were either constructed or developed recently in eight divisions. Of the 100 highways, 99 have been done with the government fund while the rest one four-lane 70km from Gazipur's Joydebpur to Tangail’s Alenga highway at a cost of Taka 6168.83 crore was built under ADB, OPEC and Abu Dhabi fund.

The national highways connect the capital to divisional cities, sea ports, land ports and international highways.  Regional highways connect district towns to river ports and land ports while district roads link district towns with upazilas or one upazila with another.

The new highways would help

 reduce road accidents and travel

 time along with contributing

 immensely to the socio-

economic development

All concerned including general people will have to pay focus on the proper maintenance of the roads and highways. Millions of people especially the remote area of the country are so much happy, enthusiastic and delighted to witness the opening of their respective dream highways to traffic.

After the inauguration of the super structure Padma Multi Purpose Bridge the government has also opened 100 bridges including three important new bridges -- Kalna Bridge in Narail, Bekutia Bridge in Pirojpur, and 3rd Shitalakhya Bridge in Narayanganj. We applaud the government for opening 100 highways at a time only one and a half months after the inauguration of 100 bridges and five months after the inauguration Padma Bridge and three other important bridges.

It has been possible to implement all these projects successfully amid many challenges and global crisis because of Sheikh Hasina’s earnest efforts and strong supervision. We hope people in the remote areas of the country will have no difficulties in travelling and they can now travel their respective destinations quickly and safely. The new highways would help reduce road accidents and travel time along with contributing immensely to the socio-economic development. It is hoped that these 100 highways will change the entire economic landscape of the regions. Therefore, authorities concerned should ensure proper maintenance of these 100 highways in order to keep them in good and serviceable condition.
