Police have arrested three suspects involved in the shooting at a businessman's house in Chandanpura area of Chattogram city. A SMG (sub-machine gun), a pistol, a revolver and a large quantity of bullets have been recovered from them. Police said the recovered pistol and revolver were weapons looted from two police stations.
CMP Additional Commissioner Wahidul Haque Chowdhury gave this information at a press conference held at the Chattogram Metropolitan Police office around 11 pm on Tuesday.
The three arrested are Abdul Kaium Chowdhury alias Emon, Mohammad Monir and Mohammad Sayem.
He said that the terrorists opened fire on the house of Smart Group Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury in Chandanpura area on February 28 after failing to receive a ransom of crores of taka. Later, they were arrested in a raid in different parts of the city on Tuesday based on secret information.
Initial interrogation of the arrested persons revealed that the three recovered weapons were used in the attack. The matter will be further confirmed through ballistic tests.
Police said that among the recovered weapons, the pistol and revolver were looted from Doublemooring and Pahartali police stations in Chattogram on August 5, 2024. The arrested persons also admitted that the SMGT was purchased from a hill terrorist group in Khagrachari.
A team of Chawkbazar police station first arrested the armed terrorist Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury alias Emon. Later, based on the information provided by him, a foreign three-two bore revolver and 9 rounds of bullets were recovered from the Chawkbazar area. The weapon was looted from Pahartali police station.
Police said that Abdul Kaium is a fugitive accused serving a life sentence in the controversial eight murder cases committed in Bahaddarhat in 2000 and is an associate of top terrorist Boro Sajjad Group.
Based on his information, a team of Panchlaish police station arrested Monir along with a Brazilian Taurus 9 MM pistol and a motorcycle. The recovered pistol was looted from Doublemooring police station.
There are at least 10 cases each against the arrested Monir and Sayem under the Arms Act for murder, robbery, extortion and robbery. Later, according to Monir's information, his associate Sayem was arrested from Bayezid Bostami area. According to Sayem's information, an SMG, two magazines and 50 rounds of bullets were recovered from Khulshi police station area.
According to the police, the three arrested are active members of the top terrorist Boro Sajjad Group. They used to participate in murder, robbery, extortion and armed control of Balumahal on the orders of Sajjad.
In addition, a video clip related to the oath-taking of new members of the Sajjad Group was also recovered from Abdul Kaium.
