Playwright Afsar Ahmad passes away

Eminent playwright and former Pro Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Professor Dr Afsar Ahmad died of a cardiac arrest on Saturday noon at a city hospital at the age of 62.

Prof Ahmad breathed his last at around 2 pm at National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases while understanding treatment, confirmed Prof Dr Esrafil Ahmed, Chairman of JU department of Drama and Dramatics. 

“Prof Afsar Ahmad went to Khulna recently and returned by air from Jessore Airport on Saturday morning.  Landing at the airport, he had heart problems and was rushed to the National Heart Institute for treatment where doctors declared him dead,” said Prof Esrafil. The untimely death of Professor Afsar Ahmed has cast a shadow of mourning over the university. Teachers, students and vice-chancellor of the university expressed their grief over his death and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.

“The sudden death of Professor Afsar Ahmed is an irreparable loss to Bengali drama, culture and the university,” said JU VC Prof Dr Farzana Islam in a condolence message.
