Employers across sectors have been directed by the government to ensure timely payment of salaries and bonuses to workers before the upcoming Eid holiday, stated State Minister for the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, Wednesday.

Addressing the 77th Tripartite Consultative Council (TCC) meeting at the secretariat's conference room, the state minister emphasized the importance of prompt payment of dues and advised against layoffs or factory closures before Eid.

During the meeting, discussions were held on various issues, including salaries, bonuses, and Eid holidays, with stakeholders from employers and labour organisations, including representatives from the ready-made garments sector.

According to a list compiled by the Industrial Police, approximately 416 factories may encounter difficulties in disbursing wages and bonuses to their employees before Eid-ul-Fitr. Of these, 171 are BGMEA member factories, 71 are BKMEA members, and 29 are BTMA members.

The Industrial Police, in a press release following their meeting on Monday, urged garment owners to find alternatives if they fail to meet payment obligations to workers.
