A man died after he was pushed off a running passenger bus in the city’s Jatrabari area. Abu Sayem Murad, 35 died after being allegedly pushed off a moving bus by the helper on Saturday evening in the capital's Jatrabari area.

Murad locked into an altercation over fare and at one stage, the helper pushed him off the moving bus that soon ran over him, leaving him dead on the spot. Murad had protested when the bus workers took extra fare from him. We think the helper has committed murder as he pushed Murad off a running bus to death. Apart from the helper, the driver and conductors, who also assisted the helper to through the man out of the bus, also committed same the crime.

The tragedy with Murad is not a lone incident in capital Dhaka. A series of such incidents took places in the city and elsewhere the country in the past. Regular commuters say a majority of drivers and conductors are ill-behaved and even sometime they beat up the passengers.

The government should take

stringent action against the rude transport

workers and bring them to book

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) repeatedly warned of strict actions against people who are misbehaving with passengers and charging extra bus fares. If there is any irregularity or misconduct found in collecting the fare of public transport, the BRTA would definitely take action against the culprits, it assured the commuters earlier.

But transport workers still charge extra fare under the very nose of the authorities concerned. It cannot be tolerated and continued as there is no legal or ethical basis for charging extra fares. Therefore, transport owners, workers, traffic police and government authorities must make coordinated efforts and ensure an effective system to stop such barbaric killing of passenger.

Mobile court should be conducted frequently to punish those who commit such deadly crime, violate rules and harass passengers. A strong awareness campaign is needed in this regard. The government must to take an effective step to prevent, manage, and deter acts of disruptive and unruly behavior by transport workers. The government should take stringent action against the rude transport workers and bring them to book immediately.
