A young entrepreneur from Parbatipur upazila in Dinajpur, Masud Parvez Sarkar, has drawn attention not only for his business success but also for paying a substantial amount in income tax and VAT. He said his firm, Messrs Meghla Machinery, paid nearly Tk 3 crore in income tax and VAT in the last fiscal year.
Masud Parvez, who has long been engaged in the business of buying and selling obsolete and discarded materials (scrap), has expanded his operations beyond Dinajpur to different parts of the northern region and Dhaka. He participates in tenders for the sale of obsolete materials from government and private institutions, cantonments and other important establishments, purchasing the materials as the highest bidder.
According to relevant documents, Messrs Meghla Machinery purchased materials through tenders from the Paglapir office of Rangpur Palli Bidyut Samity-2 in several lots. The records show that the firm purchased around 28,441kg of materials in three phases in November 2024 and further obsolete materials on October 26, 2025.
He also purchased materials worth around Tk 7,30,892 for four EM lots from Bir Uttam Shaheed Mahbub Cantonment (Kholahati Cantonment) in Parbatipur on February 6, 2025. In addition, he participated in a tender for scrap machinery of Dinajpur Textile Mills Limited and purchased the materials as the highest bidder with an offer of Tk 5 crore 12 lakh 50 thousand on November 19, 2025. Recently, his firm purchased obsolete materials from Satata Auto Rice Mill in the Ambari area of Parbatipur upazila through a tender for Tk 1 crore 8 lakh.
Local sources said around 20 workers are currently employed by Messrs Meghla Machinery, with their families depending on their earnings.
Meanwhile, Masud Parvez's close associates and local businesspeople have alleged that a group is conducting a smear campaign against him as his business continues to grow. They said attempts were being made to mislead people despite his conducting business in accordance with the rules through competitive tenders. Businesspeople in Parbatipur municipal town said businessmen should be assessed on the basis of official documents and information, and that legitimate businesses should be ensured an environment free from administrative harassment.
Masud Parvez Sarkar said Meghla Machinery is being operated in accordance with government rules and laws. “Nearly Tk 3 crore in income tax and VAT was paid in the last fiscal year. I seek the cooperation of the administration and all concerned in conducting my business in accordance with the rules,” he said. #EK
