The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to postpone the announcement of their ODI captain for the upcoming Asia Cup.
This information was confirmed by Jalal Yunus, the cricket operations chairman, on Tuesday. The announcement of the new captain will now be made by the board president, Nazmul Hassan Papon, on August 12.
The candidates in contention for the captaincy are Shakib al Hasan, Litton Das, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Jalal Yunus revealed that an emergency meeting was held to discuss the captaincy situation, leading to the decision to delay the announcement. Originally, the plan was to select the captain for the Asia Cup during this time, but after the meeting, the responsibility of choosing the captain has been transferred to the head of the board, Nazmul Hassan Papon.
“You know that we had an emergency meeting today. One of the reasons for calling the emergency meeting was about the captaincy. Originally, there was talk of selecting the captain for the Asia Cup. We sat in the board meeting today,” Jalal said to the media.
The board members have collectively given the board president the authority to select the captain. Nazmul Hassan Papon will now engage in discussions with the potential candidates and make a final decision. It is expected that the details of the new captain will be disclosed before August 12.
“We all elected the honorable board president to select the captain, we gave him the responsibility to elect the captain. He will now deliberate and talk to the few possible candidates and finalize the decision. Hopefully, we will be able to give the details before August 12,” Jalal added.
Jalal Yunus also mentioned that the new captain might be appointed specifically for the Asia Cup, and decisions regarding who will lead the team in the subsequent New Zealand series and the World Cup would be made at a later time.
