Panchagarh-Dhaka luggage train service begins

Bangladesh Railway (BR) launched special train service with air-conditioned luggage vans on Panchagarh-Dhaka route for transporting essentials like vegetables from Bir Muktijoddha Sirajul Islam Railway Station in Panchagarh on Monday.

The department has taken the initiative to launch these kinds of special trains to transport vegetables, foodgrains and other agro-commodity produced by local farmers amid lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic as per the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Panchagarh Sabina Yeasmin formally inaugurated the luggage train service on behalf of Railways Minister Advocate Nurul Islam Sujon.

Lalmonirhat Divisional Railway Manager Shah Sufi Nur Mohammed, Police Super Yousuf Ali, Zila Parishad Chairman Anwar Sadat Samrat, Sadar Upazila Chairman Amirul Islam were present, among others, on the occasion.

Dinajpur Station Superintendent ABM Ziaur Rahman Zia told this correspondent that luggage trains have started plying from Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Joypurhat, Gazipur and Dhaka to prevent corona virus. Any ordinary person can book this freight train to transport their goods.Ordinary people are happy to get such a low priced way of transporting their goods.

Ziaur added that luggage trains from Panchagarh to Dhaka go on Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays and freight trains from Dhaka to Panchagarh come on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays of the week. The service is closed on Fridays.
